Answer: EL (Electroluminescent) Glow in these faceplates is a thin copper sheet with a phosphorous powder coating protected by an outer PVC layer. The faceplates operate on Alternating Current through an Inverter. When a current is applied to the sheet the phosphorous reacts by giving off an electroluminescent (light made by electricity) glow. I think it's first commercial application was indiglo watches. Speedhut offers EL GLO faces where the whole face lights up or Reverse EL GLO where only the font, tick marks and logos Glow.
